We get asked quite frequently IF sitting on Council can be a paid position?
The answer is YES, as long as it’s in the operating budget that was approved by the owners at the AGM by a majority resolution!
We have noticed a disturbing trend recently of Council members resigning from their positions, or declining to accept nominations for Council. This is understandable, as Strata Corporations have become increasingly difficult to manage with the Government continually intervening in things. More CRT and HRT cases, more rentals being allowed in strata buildings, more governance, and more headaches!
Sitting on Council can take up hours of your evening and weekend time, time that could be better spent with your family, working at your actual job, running your business, etc. This leads to apathy amongst owners, and very often the least qualified individuals end up running the strata corporation simply by default!
Having paid positions is one solution to this problem. We have found that having paid members on Council tends to create more interest from owners, and generally leads to more qualified individuals stepping up and running the show. Instead of Council consisting of a bunch of people with simply too much time on their hands, paid Councils tend to attract business people, accountants, professionals, etc.
I’m not saying that having paid positions is a silver bullet solutions for all strata corporations, but it’s certainly an option worth looking at if you’re having a tough time attracting talent from within your building.
